Zohran Mamdani confirms he will make his home in historic Gracie Mansion
The city's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to make his home in the traditional Gracie Mansion, departing from the rent-stabilised apartment that sparked debate throughout his election bid.
A Traditional Abode
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has functioned as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a central platform, did not confirm he would live there immediately following his triumph in November.
"My choice was based on our family's safety and the need to focusing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability New Yorkers elected me on," Mamdani said in a statement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its diverse immigrant populations and international dining.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change there, it will always live inside me and my efforts as mayor," he affirmed.
Campaign Controversy
Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his opponents, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the apartment although he is from a prominent family.
Previous Exceptions
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the billionaire entrepreneur, preferred to remain in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side during his three terms, which wrapped up in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg felt it ought to be a venue for civic gatherings, and advocated for a major refurbishment of the historic mansion.
A Stately Residence
When Mamdani moves into Gracie Mansion sometime around his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria apartment.
With its pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and pristine railings, Gracie Mansion is a wedding cake of a house overlooking the East River.
Inside, the lower floor of the classically designed mansion is decorated in the spirit of the home's original era.
The estate, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.
Ghostly Tales
Some residents have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the spouse of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Former Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter what anyone says," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
Mamdani's current apartment is rent stabilised, meaning the city regulates on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.
City residents consider these apartments crucial resources as the cost of housing outpaces the average income.
Data indicated Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
