During the bulk of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive within a psychic prison forged from the recollections of Vecna. The search for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's youth—a discovery that could contain the means to overcome him for good.

The Discovery in the Cavern

When she finds Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the danger lies not within the cave. Matching her view to the cut-out, she and Max suddenly fall into a abandoned tunnel.

In this place, they observe a Henry as a boy come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

*The First Shadow* opens with the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the ship's commander, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. The man in the tunnel is the one who stole the materials.

Unlocking the Mystery

Considering what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container most likely held vials of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the awakening of his powers—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the case could have held exotic matter that eventually found its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it acts to anchor the Upside Down. The prequel shows that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning 12 hours later as a different person. As a youth, he fights the whispers of a dark entity, reminiscent of how Will Byers was possessed by the entity in season 2.

A Weaponized Emotion

The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave shows how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he orchestrates the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the series finale ahead.
