The Red Devils Set to Secure German Striker Lea Schüller from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for Bayern and found the net 54 times in 82 appearances for her country. Her arrival will be seen as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be holding back emotions while thanking the German club’s fans after a win over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top strikers. Per reports, the formalities for the transfer are now finalised.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's arrival should represent a significant uplift to United’s attacking options. Schüller has been remarkably reliable with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of Schüller’s signature comes at a time when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent on-pitch successes feature securing a place in the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the League Cup quarter-finals.
Off the pitch, the mid-season window has seen further activity:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure stated: “She has become a critical part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having arrived from a club in the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
