The people of Israel commemorate two-year anniversary of 7 October incident as Gaza peace negotiations continue
People have gathered across the country to commemorate 24 months since the Hamas-conducted attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions proceeded in the neighboring country over a resolution to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.
The incident led to in excess of 1,200 people killed and 251 others abducted back to Gaza as captives. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the World War II.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken more than 67,000 people, based on figures from the area's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its statistics are seen as trustworthy by the UN and other world agencies.
"The aggressive opponents have hit us hard, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on Tuesday.
He also vowed to "realize all the aims of the war: the release of all the abducted, the elimination of the Hamas regime and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a risk to Israel".
Commemorative Events Across Israel
The Israeli government delayed official remembrance events until October 16th - after the completion of the festive season - but ceremonies still occurred around the country on Tuesday.
A commemorative event for the families of Israelis killed in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the affected families, it was aired across Israeli TV networks.
A period earlier, a silent tribute was observed throughout the country.
Negotiation Meetings in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the conditions of the plan.
A senior representative familiar with the negotiations indicated that an night meeting of negotiations began at 7 PM local time.
The official said the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, due to conflicting views over the proposed Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to ensure Israel does not resume combat after the first phase of the agreement.
He added that the discussions are "challenging and have yet to deliver any real breakthrough," but pointed out that intermediaries are making efforts to close the disparities between the both parties.
Critical Points in Negotiations
- An enduring ceasefire
- The trade of the captives still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
- Plans for humanitarian aid provision
- Future administration of the region
Public Feeling
In the city's public square previously, 29-year-old a woman - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where hundreds were murdered and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - shared: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until each abducted person return none of us will feel safe."
"After we see everyone home again, we can relax anew. Then we can start to heal," she continued.
Outside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's official dwelling in the capital, people assembled to demonstrate their backing for the relatives of the captives. Israel says nearly fifty continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Activist a participant remarked: "It's necessary do whatever arrangement needed for the abducted to come back home. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately seventy percent of Israeli citizens want the conflict to end in exchange for the freedom of the captives.
Palestinian Circumstances
At the site of the gathering, those paying respects assembled to honor the dead.
From that location, the boom of military attacks and shelling could be detected just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli bombardment persisted.
In the urban center, attacks were noted in the morning of that day in the western Tal al-Hawa, area and locality districts and in the eastern area of that sector, as well Shati refugee camp to the northwestern area.
"As the night comes, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident a local woman, whose teenage son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack earlier, described.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. All the night we are sleeping together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who places his head on me throughout the night."
"Continuously we monitor the news to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this truce will not be completed and that the conflict will resume to us."
Health Emergency
The healthcare center in the urban area said it had received the bodies of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.
Another medical facility in the south region of Khan Younis said additional fatalities had been delivered. A person was killed by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, medics reported.
