The Gunners' Disputed Sponsorship Deal with Visit Rwanda Is Ending This Coming Year
The North London club has declared that its much-debated sponsorship arrangement with Visit Rwanda will terminate in June of next year.
Origins and Examination
The partnership, said to be worth around £10m per year, was initiated six years ago and has since been heavily criticized.
This criticism arises from Rwanda's alleged support for the M23 militia in persistent fighting in the eastern region of the adjacent DRC.
Earlier this year, Arsenal was criticized for committing a disrespectful act to the authorities in Congo by declining to meet with Foreign Minister Thérèse Kayikwamba Wagner to discuss the partnership.
Partnership Structure and Objectives
Visit Rwanda operates as an arm of the Rwanda's development authority, which is a government department.
Many speculate that Arsenal entered into and maintained this partnership chiefly to increase their following across the continent.
Nevertheless, the deal has now ended after both parties “collectively determined” to go their separate ways.
“Collaboratively, Arsenal and the Rwanda Development Board have exceeded the initial objectives of the partnership – promoting conservation and responsible tourism, motivating countless fans to discover the country, and establishing a durable base for tourism growth,” stated an official Arsenal statement.
The statement continued that the partnership has also aided Rwanda's objective to emerge as an global sports center in Africa and welcome more worldwide tournaments while implementing grassroots football initiatives that have helped hundreds of young players and coaches develop their skills and promote increased engagement in sport across the country.
Leadership View and Supporter Response
Richard Garlick, Arsenal's chief executive officer, characterized the deal as a “major expedition” and claimed it had been “propelling” the club's aspirations.
However, this perspective was not shared by a segment of the club's followers, with the activist organization Arsenal Peace Advocates holding rallies outside the club's home ground during the first leg of the Champions League semi-final against the French club in the end of April.
Demonstrators showed a sign stating “Drop Visit Rwanda” and provided wristbands to cover up the Rwanda branding on jerseys.
Wider Landscape and Additional Teams
During that period, the French champions continued their sponsorship agreement with Visit Rwanda until 2028.
Meanwhile, Atlético Madrid entered a new agreement for the same period that has led to the emblem appearing on the Madrid-based team's first-team and women's team jerseys.
