The Chainsaw Man Film Dominates American Box Office in First Weekend
Has Sony repeated their success? Coming after the success of the blockbuster Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, which grossed in excess of $600 million globally, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has officially crossed the hundred-million-dollar milestone worldwide, attaining a international earnings of $108M this weekend. This feature surpassed the horror sequel Black Phone 2 ($12.9 million) in its sophomore frame in movie houses, as well as the music documentary Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere starring the talented Jeremy Allen White ($9 million).
Impressive American and Worldwide Earnings
Helmed by filmmaker Tatsuya Yoshihara, the movie is a direct continuation of the initial season of Chainsaw Man. It brought in $18.2M in the U.S. after a robust $5.2 million Saturday and four-point-five-million-dollar Sunday. Globally, the animated by MAPPA movie grossed $14.7M across 46 global regions, bringing its global earnings to $60.4 million under Sony ($43.1 million abroad, $18.2 million in the U.S.). Sony has yet to announce its final earnings figure.
Benchmarks to Previous Blockbuster Anime Movies
Anime marketing agency White Box Entertainment previously spoke, contrasting the movie's expected results to the popular film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, which earned $34M in the domestic market in 2022 and started with a comparable $18M stateside. Reze Arc’s debut weekend matches that benchmark, while its $108 million international sum is now positioned just behind Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s over $166 million overall box office. Although it’s unlikely this Chainsaw Man film will achieve the numbers of smash success the record-breaking Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, this is still a significant success for Sony.
Fan Engagement Efforts Fuel Box Office Dominance
Sony and its subsidiary Crunchyroll have skillfully used audience interaction to drive their supremacy at the anime box office. The Reze Arc promotional efforts began at the Los Angeles Anime Expo in July with a discussion featuring MAPPA, special events, and Pochita-themed pictures, followed by a major presence at the New York Comic Con showcasing behind-the-scenes footage, audience giveaways, and additional MAPPA panels. There was even an exclusive fan screening for general audiences and popular figures too after the final day of the gathering.
Future Prospects
This year marks a significant period for animated films, and for the studio, which has one more feature-length anime debuting this year in the film Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution in November.
