Senegal's Emerging Talent Lamine Camara: From Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
When I walk into the space, the young midfielder grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. It’s a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “I only wanted football; I was focused solely on that,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent convinced clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the most difficult approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or manager, it was from his dad. “He was against me to play football simply because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.
Overcoming Early Hurdles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which deterred his hometown team Casa Sports from giving him a contract.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “astonished” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “They took me straight to the academy. They didn’t want me from going back to Casamance,” he recalled.
An Unforgettable Year and European Breakthrough
That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and being named best player.
A month later, he was unveiled as Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a challenge,” states the 21-year-old. He has lived by himself in Europe, a situation his relatives encourage to keep him focused.
Inspiration and On-Field Identity
Distractions aren't a problem for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and superb skills. He is also a huge fan of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits he must to temper his aggression, after being sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.
Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals
At Monaco, he cherishes learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and especially Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” he said.
Currently, attention is squarely on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – there's no denying it. If you beat England in their own country…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.
Regarding a future move to the English top flight, he remains focused on Monaco at present. “I feel really comfortable here,” he insists. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.
“The pressure is on us – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder blends a modest start, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to lead Senegal to Afcon success and forge his own lasting legacy in the game.
