Russell Wilson Fires Back at Former Coach Sean Payton Regarding Jaxson Dart Remarks
NY Giants quarterback Russell Wilson did not hold back on online platforms this week, reacting to recent criticism from his ex-mentor Sean Payton.
"Tasteless... but not surprised...," Wilson declared on X. "Didn't realize you're still bounty hunting 15+ years later through the press."
The quarterback's remarks pointed to the infamous bounty scandal issue from 2009-11, when Payton was coaching the New Orleans Saints.
At that time, the NFL determined that the Saints had rewarded team members for delivering aggressive tackles on rival teams. Consequently, Payton received a suspension from the NFL for one season.
What Sparked the Recent Dispute
Wilson's reaction came after Payton made comments after Denver's historic 33-32 win over the New York. The coach suggested that the Giants had "discovered new energy" with their new QB, who has replaced Wilson as the starting quarterback.
Moreover, Payton implied that he had told team owner John Mara that he would rather facing Wilson over Dart.
"I was talking to John Mara recently and I said, 'We hoped that change would've happened long after our game,'" Payton commented.
Context of the Coach-QB Relationship
- Wilson joined the Denver from the Seahawks in 2022 and signed a 5-year, $245M contract.
- The team went 4 wins and 11 losses in his debut year before Denver hired Payton, who was returning to the sidelines after a period in TV commentary.
- Payton replaced Wilson 15 games into the 2023 campaign, a decision that prevented the player from getting injured.
If Wilson remained on the team by March 2024, his $37M pay for the following year would have been guaranteed. Ultimately, Wilson was let go, marking the ugly breakup between the player and his mentor.
