Rob Edwards along with O'Neil are two of the early names under consideration to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolves.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday after the squad's 10-match winless start to the top-flight campaign.
And Edwards and O'Neil - both of who have previous associations to the team - are among the options to be considered by the Wolves leadership.
The manager is presently at another club, which would pose a potential obstacle to his appointment at Wolves' stadium.
Nevertheless the ex- Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of games for Wolves during his playing career - is considered a leading contender for the vacancy.
The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the Wolves directors as they begin the process of appointing a new head coach.
O'Neil is also appearing as a unexpected candidate, although he would be a shock choice given he was released by Wolves in the previous winter.
The former West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning the club would not be required to pay any buyout fee.
