A significant industrial complex located on the outskirts of the capital is dealing with nuclear contamination after an official team found traces of the dangerous isotope Caesium-137 at twenty-two production plants within the area, that encompasses businesses that export frozen marine products.

Indonesian authorities launched an inquiry when the American FDA identified Caesium-137, a nuclear substance, in a shipment of frozen breaded shrimp exported by a local firm.

Officials issued an warning instructing distributors and retailers to dispose of the product and not sell it, although the detected level was well under the authority's action limit. They noted that the quantity of Caesium-137 they had detected would not pose an immediate hazard to consumers.

The FDA stated: “The primary health effect of worry following extended, ongoing low dose exposure (for example through eating of polluted products or water over a period) is an increased risk of cancer, resulting from damage to DNA within body cells.”

Widespread Pollution and Medical Examinations

Radiation tests revealed at least 22 plants in the manufacturing area were affected. The Indonesian taskforce did not name the twenty-one additional manufacturing sites, but said they would promptly undergo decontamination procedures conducted by the country's atomic energy authority.

A senior official declared that people living in strongly polluted zones would be relocated until the site was cleaned, emphasizing that the well-being of the residents was the “main concern”.

Health officials also conducted checks on nearby employees and residents living close to the industrial estate, identifying nine people who showed signs for exposure to Caesium-137. These individuals were referred to a medical facility before being cleared to go back.
