McLaren Points Finger at Opposing Racers for Piastri-Norris Collision
A racing wheel flies off the car of Norris after he collided with fellow driver Oscar Piastri at the start of the United States Grand Prix short race.
McLaren Formula 1 executives Brown and Andrea Stella pointed to opposing racers for the incident between Piastri and Lando Norris at the start of the US GP sprint event.
Piastri, leading Norris in the championship by twenty-two points, bounced into his team-mate after hitting Sauber's Hulkenberg.
The crash eliminated both team drivers from the race, along with the Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.
Team Executives Voice Frustration Over Incident
Brown, the team's CEO, commented to broadcasters that some of the racing at the front was "inexperienced", remarking: "Clearly Nico made contact with Oscar and he had no reason being where he was."
McLaren F1 team principal Andrea Stella commented: "The reaction is that we are disappointed that we didn't have the chance to compete."
"It is unexpected that some racers with a lot of experience fail to act with justful prudence. Enter the initial turn, make sure you avoid harming competitors and continue."
McLaren clarified that Stella was pointing to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.
Contrasting Views on the Crash
However, 1996 world champion Damon Hill, commentating for a sports broadcast, said he thought the Australian had not shown enough understanding of the dangers of the opening turn of an F1 race when he decided to cut back to try to overtake his teammate.
The Australian had a better start than the Briton and initially challenged on the outside on the uphill entry to the corner.
However he then moved inside in an effort to get a advantage on Norris on the way out, only to collide with Hulkenberg.
Racer Comments After the Incident
The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what happened, I attempted to cut back on Lando and we were both quite distant from the apex and then were struck and it propelled me into Lando. Unfortunate."
His teammate commented: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Further back things happened and I just was unfortunate and was struck because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more people further back just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."
Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the right place on the inside, but some vehicles came very quickly from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the middle."
The Sauber driver, who had earned a season-best fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from the previous day in the trash. Just messy."
"Piastri steered inward pretty aggressively trying to get the undercut and way out of Turn One but I can't just disappear."
"I had Alonso attack on the inner side and I couldn't see him any more. I aimed to leave space for him and then Oscar steered inward and the contact was unavoidable."
Post-Crash and Team Response
McLaren will review the incident with their racers but not until the event weekend. Both vehicles needed extensive work before qualifying session at 10 PM BST on the weekend.
Stella said: "Overall displeased but we accept it, we are now concentrating on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will restart the event from there."
"Our team holds a strong position from our competitiveness point of view so I hope we have the possibility to compete, compete fairly and utilize our capabilities."
"The points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about bad intentions, just caution. A little more prudence would be good for everyone."
Standings Impact
The sprint event was won by Red Bull's Verstappen, who gained ground on both McLaren drivers in the standings - he is now fifty-five points behind the Australian and thirty-three adrift of the Briton.
Stella said: "The implication is what the maths show - we missed out on eight championship points with both drivers, but we focus on ourselves. We have a highly capable vehicle and two strong drivers. We anticipate just some normal racing."
The Red Bull driver said he was approaching the championship race by race.
