Larian Studios Explains Its Application of Generative AI for Upcoming Divinity Game

The developer behind hit titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently teased its next major project, creating a wave of excitement within the player base. However, follow-up remarks from the company's co-founder have introduced nuance to the narrative, addressing the studio's approach toward AI tools.

A Tool for Ideation, Not Replacement

In a new message, Larian's director outlined that the company is using machine learning for certain ancillary functions. These include developing PowerPoint slides, generating early-stage visual ideas, and drafting draft copy.

Crucially, Vincke emphasized that the shipping content in the game will be authored exclusively by real writers. "Larian is developing every line in-house," he said.

Our studio is constantly expanding our team of concept artists and are currently putting together dedicated writer rooms.

Given that concept art is being particularly referenced — we presently have twenty-three visual developers and have positions available for additional artists.

Each initiative we do is incremental and aimed at enabling creatives to spend additional energy on actual creation.

Every machine learning application implemented properly is additive to a creative team workflow, not a substitute for their craft.

Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision

The revelation of using AI at first provoked unease among a segment of the fanbase. In reply, Vincke provided additional elaboration on social media.

"At Larian, we employ machine learning to research ideas, similar to we use Google and reference books," he stated. "During the initial ideation stages we use it as a rough outline for composition which we then substitute with hand-crafted illustrations."

He continued, "We've hired creatives for their inherent skill, not for their capacity to replicate what a AI generates."

Key Areas of AI Integration

Vincke had in the past detailed the team's targeted approach to this technology, grouping its use into three main pillars:

  • Handling Monotonous Jobs: This includes motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like adjusting assets for various species.
  • Fast-Tracked Experimentation: Using tools to speedily create basic versions of gameplay ideas to test concepts ahead of expensive development.
  • Long-Term Aspirations: Researching how AI could in the future enhance innovative gameplay, particularly in managing dynamic reactions in a complex RPG.

He explicitly noted that core creative domains — including music composition — are are absolutely not departments where the team is reducing artistic involvement. On the contrary, Larian is expanding its staff in these very roles.

"Our studio is neither shipping a game with machine-made assets, and we are certainly not looking at reducing staff to substitute them with AI," Vincke concluded.
