Individuals Stopping Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent health publication points out that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these drugs must be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who lose weight through dieting usually see a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
The struggle is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
