The EU might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
