Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under house arrest pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could facilitate a potential flight.

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said intelligence from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on the weekend.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your homeland, or watch it all from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to fight with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of the former president's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a announcement said.

The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the capital, Brazil's capital, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative US President Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brasilia and will have a detention review on the next day.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on the previous day that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that the former president be permitted to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Background on Conviction

The former president was determined responsible of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the support of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, thousands of his backers stormed and vandalised official structures in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces took action and around 1,500 people were arrested.

The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by Bolsonaro whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and reinstate his authority.

At the period, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until twenty-sixty - eight years after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the 2026 national vote.
