Biden Bowl, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Getting rid of unneeded presents can be viewed as slightly impolite – except if it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Clear-Out
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, will offload an estimated 270 gifts given to her by international figures during her travels. This unusual assortment reportedly features objects like a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
The presents, together, are valued at around €800,000. They will be put up for sale via competitive bidding by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date has not been finalized, but the goal is to hold the auction before Christmas, with the revenue going to non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Collection
The items are currently stored in a storage room on the upper level of the prime minister's official office. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been stored away for years.
The detailed catalog remains disclosed, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of official presents was submitted to lawmakers. The question focused on whether a statutory cap on gift value was being honored. According to regulation, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.
An International Array of Presents
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A traditional Kerala dress from the Indian leader.
- A set of adornments from the Slovakian president.
- A porcelain tea set and six bottles of wine from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A electronic pad from the leader of Ukraine.
- Watercolour paintings from Moldova.
- Additional objects including cosmetics, a skateboard, and several rugs from trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Possibly the most unusual gifts were the Milei figurine and the blue python skin shoes," one might note.
Political Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her allies, with building relationships with international counterparts and positioning Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
The forthcoming sale represents a distinct method to deal with the protocol gifts that build up during a political career.
