Arne Slot Insists He Is Safe and Has Liverpool's Backing Following PSV Eindhoven Humiliation
The Liverpool head coach admitted that it was expected for questions to be asked about his position following another heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in twelve games, marking the club's worst streak after being relegated in 1953-54.
They were taken apart by the Eredivisie champions on a difficult evening at their home ground.
“I'm confident, I am OK, I've received significant support from the top,” the coach commented.
“It would be great to turn it around and earn three points of course but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He noted, “I accept my role. It is not the first time I’ve been in a challenging situation but it's crucial that we turned it around.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to provide details on his conversations with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot explained:
“We talk a lot. They are supportive to the team and to me and those talks happen but they don’t call me constantly each day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “During our regular exchanges I feel the confidence. However I've not talked to them after this match so far so let’s see.”
Familiar Problems and Squad Response
Slot lamented familiar shortcomings from his team in their Champions League defeat, namely missed opportunities and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was blunter in his assessment of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the answers. Frankly, I do not. I'm telling that to everybody,” the midfielder stated.
“It is unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to consider it. I’m past getting mad inside. I've reached the stage now where I simply lack the phrases.”
He added, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the club I love. I support them, and I've watched this club all my life.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a spell of this nature with results so bad.”
He stated, “But we still have the emblem on our chest. And as long as that badge is taken away, we’re always going to fight.”
“We’re going to try to get this team back to the top, prove once more the values of this club and why people call it the best team in the world.”
“But right now, we’re in the shit and it needs to change.”
