Afghan Rulers Employed Abandoned UK Gear to Track Down Local Nationals That Served Alongside Allied Forces, Investigation Is Told

An informant has told the Afghan leak inquiry that the UK failed to secure sensitive equipment enabling the militant group to track down local individuals that had served with western forces.

Information Leak Puts Thousands at Risk

The source, known as Person A, stated that individuals impacted by the security lapse were advised to relocate and alter their mobile numbers to ensure their safety from the Taliban.

MPs are looking into official management of a serious leak of confidential data affecting nearly 19,000 individuals who had applied to relocate to the United Kingdom to flee militant rule.

How the Leak Happened

A data file including private information, comprising names, contact details and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker employed at special operations center in February 2022.

The leak became known only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had requested to relocate to Britain surfaced on Facebook.

Militant Technology

Many believe there's this misconception that Afghan rulers are without the same sort of facilities that allied forces use,” Person A informed the committee.

All equipment was abandoned in Afghanistan; they possess it. Once they acquire your phone number, they can locate your precise location. That is what specialized teams achieved.”

Under inquiry about if militant forces possessed sophisticated technology, the source declared: “They possess all resources.”

Consequences of the Data Breach

Early investigations presented to the committee estimated that no fewer than forty-nine family members and colleagues of individuals impacted by the leak had been killed.

A superinjunction concerning the breach was put in force in late 2023 and blocked any information regarding the matter from media reporting until recently.

Safety Measures

Given injunction limitations, the whistleblower and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with advised affected households they were assisting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been breached”.

“We advised that they relocate if they could and altered their phone numbers. These represented the crucial data that, if the Taliban obtained these details, would cause them being traced,” the source testified.

Contested Findings

The whistleblower contested that an official review performed by a retired civil servant had been wrong to state that the possession of the information by the regime was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.

“The crucial point is that these individuals are not confronting the Taliban; they are in hiding. Everything boils down to past work history.”

Person A described horrific abuse endured by affected individuals, including electrocution, interrogation techniques, and physical abuse.

“There are cases of four-year-old children who have had bones crushed to pressure households to reveal locations,” the whistleblower revealed.
