Acclaimed Actress Diane Ladd, Known For Her Performance in Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, Has Died at 89 Years Old.

The Academy Award-nominated actress Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran left us aged 89.

The actress, with roles featured Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, left this world in her residence at her Ojai, California home. Her passing was shared through a message shared by her offspring, Academy Award-winning star Laura Dern.

Her daughter, who performed alongside Diane Ladd in various films such as Wild at Heart and Rambling Rose, described her as “my incredible hero plus my profound gift of a mother”, stating that she was present as she died.

“She was an exceptional grandmother, mother, daughter, actress, artist along with caring individual that seemed almost dreamlike,” she stated. “We were blessed to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”

Beginnings and Major Success

Her initial acting years featured small roles on television series including The Fugitive whereas that decade saw her starring with the legendary Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.

During that year, 1974, she shared the screen alongside Ellen Burstyn in the Martin Scorsese praised dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore. Her acting brought Ladd her initial Oscar nod for best supporting actress.

Later Decades

Throughout the 1980s, she appeared in the dramatic film Black Widow, a suspense story and comedy sequel National Lampoon’s holiday comedy and also took part in the sitcom Alice, a sitcom derived from Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.

In the following decade, she received an additional Oscar nomination for supporting actress Oscar nomination for her part in the David Lynch film Wild at Heart where she acted as the mom of her real-life daughter Dern’s character. The next year she was awarded a further nomination for her acting in Rambling Rose, another movie that also featured Laura Dern.

“This was the picture which Princess Diana picked as her top choice, and she flew Laura and I to the UK for a special screening and a celebration dedicated to us,” Ladd said regarding Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, grasping our hands, and crying, seeing us act.”

The 1990s also saw roles in the comedy The Cemetery Club reuniting her with Ellen Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political story, a political comedy, starring John Travolta and Alexander Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she acted as Dern’s mother another time. Those years also brought her Emmy nominations for work in the series Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.

Partnerships with Her Daughter

She persisted in performing with Laura Dern in films blending humor and drama Daddy and Them, David Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and White’s dark comedy series Enlightened. She also appeared next to Sandra Bullock, a star in 28 Days, a movie, Sir Anthony Hopkins in that movie plus Jennifer Lawrence in Joy, a biographical drama.

Her later TV roles included the series Ray Donovan plus Young Sheldon.

Writing and Directing

Ladd also wrote and oversaw the comedy Mrs Munck that included herself and previous spouse Bruce Dern. “Bruce is a great actor,” she noted. “It was a privilege to guide him in a film. Indeed, I’m the only woman ever who directed her former husband. I humorously say: ‘I tell women, if you seek payback, direct your ex-husband.’ But I’m only kidding.”

Personal Connections

She happened to be a family member of Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a significant impact throughout my life”.

In 2018, she received an incorrect diagnosis with a respiratory illness and informed her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely when her daughter transferred her to another medical facility.

“When you use your pain and not let it back up like an injury, instead apply it to investigate, to clarify the journey for you and those around, then you are succeeding,” Ladd remarked.
